'Maggie's Hut' is a cosy shepherd's hut set in a beautiful garden. It has a comfortable double bed and a woodburning stove for colder winter nights. Perfectly located for the South Downs National Park. Also near Goodwood for its famous Festival of Speed and Revival and for exploring Chichester, Petworth & Arundel. Separate outdoor hot shower (**see note below) and 'Eco' composting loo are adjacent to the hut.

If you want to get away from it all, unwind, switch off and relax, Maggie's Hut is the perfect venue. Our small and perfectly formed hideaway is set in a secluded and private spot within our spacious garden in the downland village of Fittleworth.

The hut is extremely cosy and warm in the winter whilst also managing to stay cool at the height of the summer, shaded by the surrounding trees. There is a very comfortable double bed with crisp cotton sheets, a cosy duvet, pillows and fluffy sheepskins.

'The Bamboo Loo' is a separate outdoor 'eco' composting toilet adjacent to the hut. There is a private outdoor gas shower with instant hot running water. Showering outside is a unique and special experience and even in the colder months our guests enthuse about it! We provide towels, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Bathrobes and a hairdryer are also provided.

*** In winter, when the temperature drops below zero, we may have to drain the shower to prevent burst pipes etc. This means the shower isn't usable, but hopefully only temporarily. Once the temperature rises we will turn it back on again ***

The hut has a small wood-burner. We will give you enough kindling and logs to keep a cosy fire going for those cooler nights and mornings. There is all you need to make cups of tea (herbal teas are also provided) or enjoy a cup of our own delicious ground coffee, 'Maggie's Hut Blend', which has been especially created for us by our next door neighbours at The Honeybee Coffee Roastery (a decaffeinated blend is available on request, in advance). There are wine glasses, tumblers, plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery. There is a mini fridge, kettle and a toaster. Breakfast cereals are provided and you will find milk and water in the fridge. Hopefully the weather will be good enough for you to eat outside but if not, there is a fold-down table and chairs within the hut.

There is the option (subject to availability, ie if I'm around!) of ordering a continental breakfast basket. This would comprise freshly baked croissants, homemade bread, yoghurt, fruit, fresh orange juice, butter and preserves. £8 per person. Requires ordering in advance.

Secure parking available in our private driveway. There is also undercover parking for an open top car or motorbikes.

Maggie's Hut also has mains electric and two double power sockets.

The award winning (National Village Shop of the Year 2020) 'Fittleworth Village Stores and Cafe' is about a 10 minute walk away. It has a wide variety of produce, much of which is local. It also has a lovely café serving breakfast, snacks and light lunches. You can also buy alcohol, newspapers and it has a post office where you can withdraw cash.

Fittleworth, אנגליה, בריטניה

There is plenty to do and see in the area, and something for everyone. There are some lovely walks straight from the front door, and slightly further afield lie the beautiful South Downs with the well known walkway and many other beautiful routes. Fittleworth itself sits within the South Downs National Park and boasts two commons. We have Hesworth Common, which is just a 5 minute walk from the Hut and is an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty. If you walk to the trig point at the top you will be rewarded with beautiful far reaching views to the Downs. Fittleworth Common is a 10 minute walk away and is smaller and quieter (known mainly to the 'locals') than Hesworth but also has lovely views and a collection of unusual trees.

The Lord's Piece at Coates Common (2 miles): A beautiful piece of parkland which looks like a piece of the New Forest that has been transported to West Sussex.

The historic towns of Petworth, Arundel and Chichester are all within striking distance. We are also conveniently located for Goodwood with its very popular Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting.

You might like to hire bikes from 'Chalkpit Trails' based in Amberley. They have a good selection of mountain bikes and E- bikes and can advise on routes.

Other places of interest:

Petworth House and Park (3.7 miles): Magnificent National Trust House set in a beautiful 700 acre deer park landscaped by 'Capability' Brown and immortalized in Turner's paintings. The nearby town of Petworth is worth a visit too for a mooch about the shops (there are an abundance of antique shops), and there are a variety of good places to eat and drink.

Amberley (6.2 miles): is one of the most attractive of all downland villages. It has a lovely setting; on the east side there is the scarp slope of the Downs, rising up to Amberley Mount with a steep climb up to the South Downs Way . On the south and west sides of Amberley there's the atmospheric River Arun and the wild brooks. The village has its own Castle, and although it's in use as a hotel and wedding venue rather than a good old-fashioned historic monument the castle is extremely atmospheric. Non-guests of the hotel can walk around the back of the Amberley Castle on their way into Amberley Swamp. The recently renovated pub 'The Black Horse' is very popular and worth a visit.

Amberley Wildbrooks Nature reserve (3.6 miles): A great haven for birdlife in winter.

Amberley Working Museum (5.4 miles):This is an interesting use of an old chalk pit above the railway station - it's now home to a treasure horde of old agricultural and industrial machinery, nearly all of it still functioning.

Arundel Castle (8 miles): Founded at the end of the 11th Century, it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for nearly 1000 years. Set high on a hill in West Sussex, this great Castle commands the landscape with magnificent views across the South Downs and the River Arun. The town of Arundel is also worth exploring with a wide variety of interesting independent shops and eateries.

Parham House and Gardens (5.8 miles): (please note it is closed during the winter months, re-opening on Easter Sunday 2019) Parham is one of the country’s finest Elizabethan Houses, complete with a Great Hall and Long Gallery. The Gardens consist of beautiful Pleasure Grounds and a four-acre Walled Garden. There are stunning herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden, orchard and a 1920s Wendy House. They featured in The Guardian’s “10 best gardens to visit this summer”

The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum (14.7 miles): Historic houses and agricultural buildings dating from the 13th century to Victorian times, rescued from destruction and rebuilt in a magnificent parkland setting.

West Dean Gardens (15.6 miles): Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, West Dean is one of the greatest restored gardens open to the public today. Visitors can explore a wide range of features from surreal trees to the restored walled garden.

Goodwood: House, Hotel, Race Course, Motor Circuit and Aerodrome all within approximately 15 miles of Maggie's Hut and are worth a visit. The Aero Club cafe is open to the public and very close to the airfield and motor circuit so you can watch the comings and goings.

Cass Sculpture Foundation (12.1 miles): Visitors are welcome to explore the tranquil 26-acre site, which contain over 50 large-scale, contemporary sculptures and two indoor gallery spaces. The organisation commissions new works and curates dynamic exhibitions every year, featuring some of the most exciting artists working in sculpture today, all within a beautiful country setting.

Vineyards: If wine is your thing.... we are lucky enough to have several Vineyards very close by. Most offer visits and tours (seasonal April/May to October) but DO CHECK WEBSITES for opening times and availability as some are more limited than others and often get booked up quickly!

Stopham Vineyard: (1 mile) English still and sparkling wines on our doorstep! You can even take a lovely cross country walk from the hut to get there. Tours and visits available. You can include lunch at the White Hart Pub, situated on the river. Do check opening times.

Nutbourne Vineyard: (6 miles). A family run winery, in a lovely setting that you can visit free of charge and simply enjoy the surroundings. Lovely lake and alpacas! You can also take a picnic to enjoy in the grounds. Tours available for booking too (limited days - check website in advance).

Upperton: (5 miles) near Tillington (a picturesque village with a fabulous pub, The Horseguards Inn) A vineyard in another wonderful setting. You can enjoy a glass of sparkling wine on the terrace overlooking the Downs.

Tinwood, nr Chichester (13 miles) More delicious sparkling wine to sample at the foot of the Downs. Tours bookable in advance.

Langham Brewey, Lodsworth (7miles) An award winning micro brewery. Brewery Tours available. Once again check website for details of booking etc.

Bignor Roman Villa (4.4 miles) is the stunning remains of a Roman home with world-class mosaic floors in a spectacular Downland setting.
Learn why the Roman owners chose to develop such a magnificent settlement at Bignor in the 3rd Century AD and how they acquired wealth from its location. Open 7 days a week: 1st March – 31st October
From 10am until 5pm (last admission 4pm).
