My cottage is on the site of the former coach and stable yard of the original Fleur de Lis pub which is now a Tudor Cottage a few yards away. Before you leave the passageway onto Market Square check out the Blue Plaque on the wall which commemorates the murder plot that was hatched there and carried out upon Arden, the local mayor. The plot was instigated by his wife, and the Royal Shakespeare Company still perform a play recounting the event. As far as I know this was the only murder plot hatched here!. Arden’s Cottage can be found nearby on Abbey Street. There is a heritage centre located nearby in Preston Street that takes the name of the old pub and it is dedicated to Faversham life through the ages.
As you exit onto Market Place you will see the 16th Century Guildhall. To its right is the Royale Cinema, also a historic building, where you can watch a new release for £5. Turn left and almost immediately you will see the 16th Century “The Ship”. Look up at the inscription above the Coach Doors. Henry VIII actually moored his fleet in Faversham Creek! Nelson is reputed to have paid his men in the Three Tuns Pub a short distance away.
Faversham is home to Britain’s oldest brewery – Shepherd Neame. They have a great visitor centre just off Market Place at Court Street and run brewery tours. Court Street also bears plaques and visitor information about the contrasting visits of brothers King Charles II (the one Cromwell defeated) and King James II. The first came here to celebrate return from exile and is the reason Faversham is the only town permitted to have the royal crest of three lions to feature in its crest. The second brother was captured by Faversham fishermen attempting to flee to exile in France and imprisoned here. The catholic pilgrimage site of the National Shrine of Saint Jude is nearby on Tanners Street and served by Carmelite friars.
There are numerous nice pubs in central Faversham. I recommend the Anchor and the 14th Century Phoenix which are both on Abbey Street. Both are olde worlde and charming. The best restaurant in Faversham in my opinion is easily Posilipo, an informal but high quality, reasonably priced waterside Italian restaurant with very friendly staff on Belvedere Wharf. The unique shops on Standard Quay are well worth a visit. A five minute walk via Abbey street will take you to the Phoenix, Anchor and Standard Quay. Posilipo can be found by taking Smack Alley off Abbey Street (Smack is the name for a local type of traditional fishing boat). There are lots of nice cafés too. The garden of the Moonlight Café in Preston Street is my favourite for a cooked breakfast. Havishams in Market Place is a great vintage café and serves outside in the Market Place as well as inside. The café in Jacob's Yard serves more artisan food. Market days in Market Place are Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The Antiques Market is in the Central Car Park on the first Sunday of the month.
There is a Minor Injuries Unit, GP, Pharmacy and swimming pool adjoining the Central Car Park. Supermarkets Morrisons (North Lane) and Tesco (Crescent Street) are both a 3 minute walk from the house.

NEARBY
Whitstable is a lovely coastal town and and Historic Canterbury are just two stops away by train. Belmont House, Brogdale Farm, Doddington Hall, Maison Dieu and Mount Ephraim Gardens are nice to visit by car. Google their websites for opening times and events.
