Sorry - I am not accepting guests from outside of Hawaii. My boyfriend is high-risk and we just can't take chances. But for those of you who are here . . .
Wake up in the morning, look out your window, and see the sun rising gloriously over the ocean. This private bedroom has a comfy queen bed, with Wi-Fi and the shared bathroom is a few steps away. It is just 30 miles north of Hilo, past the lush valleys and waterfalls of the Hamakua Coast, between Hilo and Waimea (Kamuela).

הנכס
I do apologize, but I cannot host guests from the Mainland because my partner is high-risk. So I cannot offer this place for Quarantine. Also, I do to accept guests for more than two weeks, but if, after 1 week, we find that we get along well, I may be open to having you stay longer.
Enjoy this 1/8 acre with lush tropical foliage including banana, mango, lemon, tangerine, calamansi, avocado and lychee trees. You'll have full access to the house, and yard and the spacious lanai (porch) with a sweeping view of the ocean, and the living room and kitchen. Upstairs and separate are the master bedroom and a half bath, which is usually occupied by the hostess or up to four other guests (the larger downstairs bathroom has the shower, which is shared by everyone in the house).
We have the ideal climate, usually between 68-78 degrees, with refreshing trade winds (no need for A/C, but there is a fan in the room). and just enough rain to create a lush tropical ambiance, with an abundance of fruit trees and colorful, aromatic flowers. The air is fresh and clean, and by the way, the volcano is no longer active.
Free parking in front of the house on the property, so no one else parks there. Free bananas, papayas, lemons, mangoes, lychee and tangerines when in season and 10% Kona coffee, black and herbal tea, Wi-Fi and Jacuzzi tub.
We are just 3 blocks from the Papaaloa Store and Cafe, which has an excellent selection of local fresh fruits and veggies, with some organic foods and frozen meat (including local grass fed beef) and alcohol. The Cafe is not currently open, but you can get take-out at the Store (which is open til 7, but closed on Sundays), which has good food, including excellent pizza and burgers.
It’s usually quiet and peaceful in Papaaloa, with lots of local color, but do expect the occasional roosters and dogs and at night the coqui frogs sing their concert.
You will want to have a car, though there is access to a $1 bus that doesn't run very often, if you don’t mind the steep 2-block walk up the hill from Highway 19.
There are lots of fun restaurants and places to shop in Hilo and in Honoka'a (both 30 minutes away). The house is just 15 minutes from dramatic Laupahoehoe Point where you can watch the ocean waves crashing against the lava rocks.
Going south, the house is about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Akaka Falls, and the world-famous Arboretum.
A half-hour to the north is the quaint little town of Honoka'a, and a supermarket and several good restaurants. and a little further north is the lush Waipio Valley. Or turn west from Honokaa and another quarter-hour will take you to the town of Waimea (Kamuela) with a brewery and more restaurants and galleries.
A half-hour past Waimea you will find some of the world’s finest white sand beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna, where there is excellent snorkeling and the sun almost always shines.
One of the marvels of the Big Island is that it contains 10 of the world's 14 different climate zones. When you dream of a lush tropical Hawaii, with soft trade winds and waterfalls and sensual aromas, and coconut trees swaying in the wind, you are dreaming of the climate of the Hamakua Coast, which is where we are. But please note that if you want to be able to wake up in the morning and walk to the beach, you'll need to go to the other side. If you long for white sand beaches and hot dry weather, you need to go to the Kona side of the island.
But then you'll be in the hot, dry, humid climate. If you enjoy the lush green, with refreshing breezes and amazing sunrises, Papaaloa is the place for you. Or, if you have time, you may enjoy spending half your time on this side of the island (the Hamakua Coast on the Hilo Side) and half your time on the Kona side.

Extra Details
Other Things to Note
There is a collection of DVDs in your room and a DVD player that you can plug into your laptop. There is a TV with basic cable in the living room, which you could move into your room. There is a landline with free phone calls to the US and Canada. There is half-decent cell phone coverage if you have AT&T, but other cell phones tend to have intermittent reception. You will have access to the washing machine, dryer and clothesline.
People from all backgrounds are welcome here.

אזורים נגישים לאורחים
You are welcome to use the bathroom, the living room and the kitchen - they will all be shared with me, and sometimes with my boyfriend or ( if I'm gone) with other guests.

דברים נוספים שכדאי לדעת
Please note that the price includes local General Excise Tax (GET) of 4.25% plus Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) Tax of 10.25% for a total of 14.5%.
Insects & Garbage
In Hawaii, ants are very prevalent and so are cockroaches. They like the warm climate just as much as we do. If you are squeamish about bugs, this isn’t a good place for you to be. I keep them mostly under control, but I don't like to use strong poisons, so sometimes you will see them here. Please wash your dishes soon after you use them, and keep all food covered and put away (there are leftover containers in the basket on the kitchen floor). Spray the counters with Orange Oxy (it’s under the kitchen sink, on the right) and wipe them after every use. If you have any smelly garbage, like packaging from fish or meat, just put that in a bag in the freezer. Or put it in a closed, sealed plastic bag and put in the outside garbage. If you do see a large cockroach (a very rare occurrence), I’d suggest you step on it or grab your shoe and smash it!
Mosquitoes & Screen Doors
No problem with mosquitoes during the day, BUT sometimes they do come out at 3 pm, so be sure to close any doors and windows that don’t have screens (almost all of them have screens).

This is an old Filipino neighborhood. When the nearby sugar cane operation was closed down, around 1985, the owner built a number of A-Frame houses for the workers to move into, and this is one of them.
The house is just 24 miles north of Hilo and about 10 miles from KoleKole Beach State Park, Laupahoehoe Point, Akaka Falls and the world famous Arboretum. Also in nearby Laupahoehoe, there is a free Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, library, gas station and convenience store.

Hi - I enjoy sharing my space and getting to know new people. I bought this house in 2013 and I had so much fun remodeling it and making it beautiful and inviting. I've written 16 books on self-healing (with Random House and Bantam) and I work occasionally as a counselor at a high-end rehab center. I love gardening, especially growing my own herbs and veggies. I love nature. This house is so great because you can see the sunrise from the lanai. I've traveled all over the US, and into Mexico, Canada, Thailand, Bali, Israel, France, Switzerland, England, and this is still one of my favorite places in the whole world. I know what it's like to be a traveler, and it's always so much nicer to stay in someone's home instead of an impersonal hotel, and to be exposed to more of the local color—which we have plenty of in our little neighborhood.
