“Fort San Felipe (Fuerte San Felipe) is Puerto Plata's only remaining colonial structure and one of the first European forts constructed in the Americas. It was built between 1564 and 1577 to defend against colonists from other European countries, as well as pirates looking for silver and gold. Its primary use throughout the centuries has been as a prison, most notoriously as a prison for political dissidents during Trujillo's dictatorship. Inside its eight-foot-thick walls, visitors will find some interesting wartime historical artifacts as well as a small museum. The fort is ringed by a moat and outlined in lights at night, and the park below the fort is an ideal spot to view the sunset; there are excellent views from the fort as well. ”

“ Law Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata's primary hub of tourist activity, is the stretch of golden-sand beach where you will find Live Merengue music is almost unavoidable, and those who are just visiting for the day don't ever have to leave the sand to get food, drinks, and souvenirs. Where the beach is not bordered by hotels, there are plenty of restaurants and a shopping center. The warm waters are ideal for swimming, as well as water sports, and there are several rental shops where you can rent equipment like banana boats or get kitesurfing instruction. ”

“The Dominican Amber Museum is one of the most visited places in Puerto Plata. Inside, it hosts one of the biggest resin exhibitions in the Dominican Republic. The country has the most important amber deposits in the world; moreover, blue, green or warm honey colours are unique from this area due to its volcanic activity. Here, you can discover the history of this vegetal-origin precious stone. One of the most important stones of this museum is a 40cm lizard conserved inside a piece of amber. This resin can hold prehistoric fossils of plants and little animals on its inside due to its sticky nature, that turns this stone in subject of study. It is said that Steven Spielberg was inspired by this museum when he was working on his famous film Jurassic Park ”

“General Gregorio Luperón House Museum, in Puerto Plata, is one of the most visited and beautiful places in the Dominican Republic, because there, it is conserved the legacy and work of the Dominican national hero. The museum is located in a victorian-style building. Inside, you can discover General Gregorio Luperón origins and story, thanks to the numerous photos and personal objects that the museum possesses. The life and times of native-born son and independence leader Gregorio Luperón are impressively fleshed out inside this beautifully restored, pale-green, Victorian-era building. Photographs and period artifacts trace Luperón's life, from humble beginnings to his role as provisional president during the 'Restoration,' as well as the story of Puerto Plata during the late-19th century. Staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic ”
