Embark on an eye-opening journey through the history of Islamic Madrid on a walk around La Latina, tracing the city’s origins all the way back to the ancient city of Mayrit. This experience is in Spanish. • Visit the Plaza de la Cebada, formerly a Muslim cemetery, and the Church of San Pedro el Viejo, where I’ll explain the post-Reconquista fusion of Muslim and Christian culture. • Stroll through the Prince of Anglona Garden, with its Islamic-style water features, before visiting the sites of the city’s medieval souk and the Islamic Wall, the oldest structure in Madrid. • Other highlights of our walk include Almudena Cathedral, with its fascinating hidden Virgin statue, and the Torre de los Huesos, a defensive tower built to protect the Islamic city. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of the multilayered history that shaped the city, and the opportunity to continue our conversation over coffee at a local cafe.

Welcome to Madrid Walking Tour

Welcome to Madrid! One of Europe's most exciting yet misunderstood cities. What it perhaps lacks in famous tourist attractions, it more than makes up for in wild history, beautiful views and exciting local stories. If you take a couple of hours to get to know Madrid, it can easily become one of your favourite cities. This English language tour starts close to the Plaza Mayor and ends at the glorious Royal Palace. We're always a friendly group of travellers led by a historian. No microphones or wikipedia style facts but a fun and friendly adventure. We'll stroll down charming streets to see the sights of the oldest part of town to uncover the stories of Madrid and discover the soul of a city that stands in the middle of nowhere, miles from its neighbours. We'll explore the history that shaped the city, find out some local food and drink traditions, and even solve a couple of mysteries. I'll give you heaps of recommendations to ensure you can confidently eat, drink and live the city like a local whilst supporting the small businesses that keep Madrid such a vibrant, homely city. Our team at Essential Flamenco will welcome you inside. You will be offered a drink at the tablao bar, and later you will visit an +100 year old original brick cave. The first 20 minutes you will relax with your drink in the main room with the Flamenco music... Next, ten minutes before the show, you will be given a introduction about the history of Flamenco, from its roots and origins to how it developed throughout the years. Finally, to conclude the experience, you will enjoy the one-hour flamenco show that will take place inside the famous cave, without amplifiers or microphones. Our capacity for the event is limited, so you are going to enjoy a unique, warm and intimate evening . Every week we are visited by different artists who delight us with their talent and art, and the performances vary daily, so each exhibit is unique! . Secrets de la Guerre Civile Espagnole

La tragique guerre civile espagnole a causé plus d'un demi-million de morts entre 1936 et 1939. Après la victoire du fasciste Franco, a conduit à une terrible dictature qui a duré 40 ans. En tant que capitale de l'Espagne, la plupart des événements les plus importants se sont déroulés à Madrid. Du début de la République cinq ans avant le coup d'État au chaos, aux fusillades, les incendies d'églises et aux bombardements par les nazis dans les premiers temps du conflit. En tant que dernière ville, avec Valence, à se rendre aux rebelles, la "bataille de Madrid" fut la plus importante de la guerre avec d'énormes répercussions internationales. Quels étaient en jeu pour Hitler, Staline et les démocraties occidentales ? Madrid est devenu un nid d'espions et le plateau d'un jeu plus vaste en prélude à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Une ville où des des intellectuels extraordinaires tels qu'Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn, Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, John Dos Passos, et André Malraux ont laissé une marque indélébile. Pourquoi les gardiens ont-ils joué un rôle aussi important ? Quelles étaient les fameuses paseos" ? Pourquoi la Gran Vía était-elle connue sous le nom d'Avenida del 15 ½ ? Tim Bikes highlights bike tour Madrid

Our tour is ideal for everyone who wants to get to know Madrid in a short time but in a relaxed way. Conducted in English. Private tours in English, Dutch, Spanish, French if available and Portuguese if available. In about 3 hours and 11 km biking, you will more or less see and hear everything of the old center while riding a very comfortable bicycle. The “must see” places as well as the hidden corners away from the typical touristic paths. We will ride mainly on cycling paths, pedestrian zones and parks. Of course there will be various stops to take pictures. When we stop, we will tell you about the stories behind what you see and tell our personal experiences of our time in Madrid. After the tour you have an idea which places you want to visit in your own time and in which restaurants and tapas bars you want to have your meal. You are inspired for the rest of your time in Madrid. We have children seats for 0-20 kg. Ask for availability. The total tour is about 3 hours. This tour requires experience with biking in the city. We have availability of electric bikes (only for adults, minimum length 1,55 m), additional costs € 10.

Secrets of Retiro Park

Founded in the first half of the XVII century as the private garden of Philip IV, the Retiro Park is not only one of the most beautiful places in Madrid, it also keeps a lot of artistic treasures and holds a significant part of Spain’s history. With its gorgeous pond and iconic “art nouveau” Glass Palace, there are also beautiful gardens as the French “Parterre”, a cozy Pompeii style little house that the king used to fish, the remains of a very symbolic little church from the XII century or a fountain that looks like an artichoke. As John H. Elliot wrote, the decoration of the Retiro Palace made Philip IV the biggest art collector in Europe and produced an artistical splendor period with Velázquez as the central figure but also Rubens and other great Spanish artists. Why madrileños called the park the “birdcage”? What where doing the daughters of Ferdinand VII dressed as farmers in the “Cows House"!? How is possible that there is a statue for the devil? And why Napoleon destroyed the park? I will not only show you the most precious sites but also try to put them in their historical and cultural context. Along the tour, an important part of the history of Spain will come to life and also some funny stories will arise.

Along the tour we will visit the city center and the old town through another perspective finding along the way beautiful buildings, hidden corners as meaningful details and misteries and stories that will help us understand the evolution and character of the capital. My goal is that at the end of the tour you will not only see some of the most beautiful and meaningful sites and also less well known great spots, but also understand their deep meaning and how modern Madrid is the result of a series of unexpected events, conquests, successes, catastrophes and contradictions that create a unique urbanism, heritage and culture with great impact in Western culture.

Madrid’s History, Bites & Sips – An Intimate Tour Since 2018

Come with me on a intimate tour with a nice mix of history, architecture, fun anecdotes, a few jokes and really, really, tasty food (Not the mainstream, cliché, touristy food!). We'll start at the Plaza Mayor and then make our way through the old village, stopping at a local market to enjoy some entrees and drinks. Then continue our historical journey through the most ancient and interesting parts of the old town, to finally end before the majestic Royal Palace. After putting aside the history we’ll finish the tour at a really classic local restaurant where you'll get to taste different, mouth-watering food and local drinks. Of course, aside from the food goodies, we will get an opportunity to chill, know each other better and share some laughs. Come and see Madrid through my eyes, I want to make you feel as if you're walking through the city with a bunch of friends but one of them happens to know a lot about it and is more than willing to share the knowledge with you!
