Places to visit

Between nature and architecture, there is no time to get bored here in Lanzarote!
You absolutely cannot leave the island without visiting the César Manrique foundation! César Manrique (1919-1992) was a multidisciplinary painter, sculptor, architect, and artist, he studied in Madrid and, after several years exhibiting all around the world, he moved to New York, the mecca of art in the 1960s. That same decade, he returned to Lanzarote to settle definitively on the island of his birth where he left an indelible mark. César Manrique Foundation is headquartered in a spectacular dwelling designed by César Manrique himself. This was his home for the 20 years running from 1968 to 1988. It is sited in the midst of a lava coulee formed during the violent eruptions that rocked the island between 1730 and 1736. This 3.000 square meter building engages in constant dialogue with the natural surroundings on its 30 000-square meter lot and beyond: here, volcano and architecture blend in mutual respect. The upper storey draws its inspiration from Lanzarote’s traditional architecture, enhanced with modern functional elements such as wide windows, large rooms, and overhead lighting. The lower storey is built around five natural volcanic bubbles interconnected by tunnels excavated in the lava. They constitute a surprisingly habitable setting and an exemplary intervention in a natural space. We recommend visiting also the "César Manrique House Museum" also known as "Palm grove House" in the little village in Haria. if you buy a joint ticket "César Manrique Foundation" (Tahíche) + "House Museum" (Haría) you can save a few € and you can use the tickets on different days.

The César Manrique House Museum is located in a handsome palm grove in the picturesque village of Haria, which still conserves many of Lanzarote’s traditions. In Haría, the artist found the quietude and harmony with nature that he had always pursued. In early 1986, he began to build his new home, re-using and adapting a run-down farmhouse sited on farmland he had purchased in the nineteen seventies. Manrique revisited the language of traditional architecture with a modern vision governed by aesthetics and comfort. He lived here until his death in 1992. In 2013 the house was opened to the public as a home and museum. Visitors are afforded a view of the rooms and the studio where the painter worked and lived during the last few years of his life. There aren’t many places that gather as many areas of interest for the cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote as Cueva de los Verdes, a unique mythological-looking cave, full of legends and extraordinary landscape and beauty. It came about after the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona, and it’s one of the most impressive hidden wonders in the depths of Lanzarote. It was used as a hideout by the locals who needed shelter to protect themselves from invasions and attacks of pirates coming from the north of Africa during the 16th and 17th Centuries. In the 19th Century, it became a must for travellers, experts and European scientists due to the uniqueness of this volcanic territory, named after a family that kept their cattle in the area, the story goes. In the 1960s, the Cabildo of Lanzarote turned to artist from Fuerteventura Jesús Soto, later in close collaboration with Manrique, to adapt this natural volcanic sanctuary that has become an attraction for thousands of visitors who wish to unveil its secret. Soto used his knowledge and focused on the lights and shadows to make the most of the brightness on rocks and highlight the shapes left by the lava on its way. The range of ochre, grey, black and red shades take over this dark paradise and imitate the light drawing grotesque landscapes and spectacular rocky structures to the amazement of visitors. Going into Cueva de los Verdes is, without a doubt, going on a journey to the centre of the earth. Previous Information We recommend you to stay close to the tour guide during your visit in order to be able to listen to the characteristics, peculiarities, and secret of Cueva de los Verdes. It is better if you do not look up too much information prior to your visit, let yourself be surprised.

Jameos del Agua is a place on earth where nature and mankind decided to come together. It was César Manrique who knew how to envision and transform what used to be debris of a volcanic tube with lava flowing from Volcán de la Corona, on the north of the island, into a unique place in the world. It was his privileged mind and hands full of life, the ones that gave shape to the rough black basalt, a place where peace and quiet, harmony and beauty prevail. White, blue, green and black, those are the colours Manrique gave to his island. Those colours get mixed up along a path of outstanding and extraordinary beauty, encouraging the imagination and dreams. On every corner, from a fresh entrance covered by large green ferns where small birds sing, to an original Auditorium, unique in the world due to its geological and acoustic features, in Jameos del Agua, every detail is a constant suggestion to reflect on, look inwards and day dream.

Jardín de Cactus was the last intervention work César Manrique performed in Lanzarote. The artist from Lanzarote could see beyond how run down the ancient rofera was. Roferas were the quarries that raids are taken from to create a very particular home for cactaceae flowers from all over he world. Surrounded by the largest cactus plantation of the island, dedicated to crops of cochineal insect, a product of great financial relevance in Lanzarote in the 19th Century. Jardín de Cactus has around 4,500 specimens of 450 different species, of 13 different families of cactus from the five continents. The green shade of the plants stands out against the blue sky and the dark volcano creating a harmonious explosion of colour that impresses visitors. The only sounds that break the peace and quiet that prevails, are singing birds and boozing insects, enjoying their very own oasis. High volcanic ash monoliths, that maintain the memory of years gone by, challenging plants from America, Africa and Oceania. At the top, on a small hill, windmills can be seen on the horizon, still standing, where Canarian cornmeal was ground dating back to the 19th Century.

Located 400 metres high, on the Risco de Famara, the Mirador del Río is one of César Manrique’s most representative architectural creations as it shows a series of artistic and architectural details and his eagerness to combine art and nature. It is located near the remains of an ancient military base that dates back to the end of the 19th Century. It is camouflaged on the rock in a way in which only a genius of Manrique’s magnitude could conceive. The Mirador takes over El Río, the narrow stretch of the sea separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa. Although unassuming on the outside, the inside hides surprising details and impressive glass windows, the eyes of El Mirador, conceived by the artist aiming to increase the effect of the panoramic view, and the monumental and unique sculptures hanging off the ceiling challenging gravity. From the atalaya, visitors may watch the eighth Canary Island, La Graciosa, and the group of islets part of the Chinijo Islands National Park. At the bottom of the cliff, the reddish shades of the salinas del Rio stand out, also known as Guza, the oldest ones on the Canary Islands. Architect Eduardo Cáceres and artist Jesús Soto, collaborated in the creation of El Mirador, which was quite outstanding taking into consideration that there were scarce means, and the terrain had to be dug and the building later had to be covered with volcanic rock.

Las Montañas del Fuego are like a walk on the Moon on earth. They originated after the violent volcanic eruptions in the south of Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736 resulting in the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. Las Montañas del Fuego have a deserted beauty, and a range of ochre shades that astound visitors. They seem small compared to one of Manrique’s powerful and fresh pieces of art, which combines, yet again, art, nature and humankind living in harmony. From deep down on earth, Islote de Hilario stands out, surrounded by a 200-square-kilometre sea of lava where 25 dormant craters lay. There, Manrique let his restless mind loose, and with his genius he came up with the idea of El Diablo restaurant bringing that place to life. That work of art, was the result of a extraordinary combination of humankind and nature, without a doubt, one of the most impressive pieces in the world. The furnace in El Diablo uses the natural heat of the earth to cook unique dishes right under our feet, ten metres deep, at almost 300 degrees. Extreme heat that comes out to the surface and creates unforgettable moments for visitors. The natural and artistic landscape of Las Montañas del Fuego allows tourists to visit the Ruta de los Volcanes on special vehicles in order for the experience of seeing such wonders of nature, in this moon-like landscape, unique.

Located at the geographical centre of San Bartolomé, Casa-Museo del Campesino was César Manrique’s way to recognise the efforts made by country people from Lanzarote, who faced treacherous conditions in order to bring the land back to life. Casa-Museo del Campesino provides an insight into Architecture, Agriculture, Handicrafts and traditional Gastronomy, topped up by Monumento a la Fecundidad, an avant-garde piece of art used by César Manrique to pay his very own tribute.

Green lagoon or Lago Verde. The green lagoon is also known as ‘Lago Verde’ and ‘Charco del los Clicos’. The name ‘Charco del los Clicos’ came from a shell fish that were in abundance in this area. Located just outside El Golfo is this beach. Above the high water line is a permanent lagoon that algae have coloured a vivid bright green. Set amongst the black sand beach and lava cliffs makes this a worth while site to see. The lagoon was formed by a volcano that had the seaward half eroded by the sea. The volcanic eruption that formed the volcano took place in the 1730’s. The lagoon remains full due to the porous rock formations below the surface allowing the sea water to enter. To get to the lagoon drive towards the beach side village of El Golfo. A few hundred meters before entering the village you start to go down hill, on the left is the car park for the lagoon. Park here then take the cliff side path for around 150 meters to the green lake view point. Along the path you will see the local fishing boats moored on the beach.

Los Hervideros (the English translation would be The Bubbling Sources) were formed by a lava flow meeting the Atlantic ocean back in the 18th century. Los Hervideros refers to the amazing display that sees the waves force water into the labyrinth of caves with such a dramatic power it appears as if the sea is bubbling and boiling. Los Hervideros wave show is really impressive on stormy sea days. A narrow path brings you to a small balcony carved in the lava from where you can admire bubbling water on calm days and huge waves on rougher days. Lanzarote was struck by a series of volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736. Lava covered one fourth of its territory, creating El Mar de Lava (The Lava Sea) on the south-west of the island. The coast at Los Hervideros is made by rough cliffs and grottoes, both results of lava’s solidification and erosion. The waves create a terrific show by forcing huge amounts of water into the lava labyrinth offering, as a result, a bubbling ocean to the visitor’s sight.

The Janubio salt mines, in Lanzarote, are the largest in the Canary Islands. It is situated in a lagoon formed from volcanic eruptions that produced a lava barrier opposite the sea. It is a good idea to visit the mines in the evening, when the sun reflects in the pools as the water evaporates and produces such a variety of shades. If you want you can do a guided tour or otherwise you can only take pictures from the viewpoint and visit the little shop that sells salt and other local products made only by local little artisanal companies. Guided tours available.

Originally conceived by César Manrique and designed by the artist Jesús Soto for the British developer Sam Benady with an architectural vision which could evoke mental imagery from the arabian nights mythology. In the early 1970s actor Omar Sharif came to Lanzarote to film “The Mysterious Island”, he visited LagOmar, fell in love with it and bought it. San Benady knowing Sharif’s reputation as a card player challenged him to a game of Bridge. Sharif accepted the challenge, not realizing that Benady was also a champion Bridge player, and allegedly lost the house. In 1989 architects Dominik von Boettinger from Germany and Beatriz van Hoff from Uruguay bought the house and initiated the last phase of development. They sought the advice of local artists and created a vernacular architecture inspired by the elements and the island’s capricious topography. The existing caves were refurbished using wood and artifacts from local shipwrecks, for the beams and lights. Local flora was incorporated in the design: cactus, palm, aloes and bougainvillea, to form an oasis within the rock. They used glass, washed concrete and pebbles to generate circular patios, the lake, cascades and a series of curvaceous spaces avoiding all forms of square tiling whatsoever.

The Jose Saramago House Museum, the house of the famous portuguese noble, is localized in Tías in Lanzarote. This museum is specially interesting for those who looking for more information on this famous portuguese artist. Here you might visit the writer’s library as well as discover the house where he lived on his last 18 years of life, a house that he described as “A House made of books”. From the house, we highlight the living room that opens to a wide garden, the writer’s favourite resting place, the room where he died, the galleries with paintings from artists as Joan Miquel Ramírez, it’s office, where he wrote the first lines of the “Blidness” and its amazing library.

Best beaches

Papagayo beaches are the perfect escape from noisy tourist areas. Papagayo beach area inside the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches includes 6 beaches: - Playa Papagayo: the most famous, scenographic and busiest one. The beach is very sheltered from winds. There is a lovely beach cafe perched up on the rock with amazing views and good food. Parking is at the top and then you walk down to the beach. - Playa de la Cera: small secluded beach in a very sheltered spot - Playa del Pozo: long beach defenitely the most quieter. 10 min walk from the Papagayo parking area - Playa Mujeres: one of the largest beaches with fantastic sand and clear sea water. Parking area "Mujeres" at the level of the beach. - Playa Caleta del Congrio: whilst all the other beaches face South West this beach looks to the South East - Playa Puerto Muelas: the faces the same way as the previous beach and often has very few people These silky beaches are famous in Spain and they are often ranked as some of the best beaches in the whole country. The Papagayo beaches are are intimate and surrounded by calm, turquoise waters and sheltered by cliffs. From these beaches you can also clearly see across the water to Fuerteventura´s sandy dunes on the horizon. The island´s tourism has not ruined the sense of unspoilt paradise here and a lot is owed to its protection status as a natural park. To get to the beaches you drive along a track off a roundabout just outside Playa Blanca. The beaches are in a national park and a small entrance fee needs to be paid. The road is rocky and rough and it will take about 15 minutes to get to the first beach from Playa Blanca. You can get there by car, but be aware that it´s rare that the insurance of your hire car will cover accidents that take place on these remote roads. We recommend you go slowly and you will see that you will have no problems. :-)

Playa Dorada is the largest central beach in Playa Blanca. This is a large golden sand beach. There are lots of sun beds and a big free area too. The beach is enclosed by two rock barriers making the beach sheltered and safe for swimming. The local shopping centre offers lots of shops and bars for food and drink. Parking is either and the main road at the top or in the shopping centre car park.

One of the most magical swimming spots on Lanzarote, this cluster of glittering turquoise natural pools dots the coast in the tranquil whitewashed fishing village of Punta Mujeres, 2km northeast of Arrieta. A few ladders provide access to the pools, overlooked by sun-soaking spots. A wonderful tapas bar, "La Piscina", overlooks one of the most popular pools.

La Graciosa is the least explored and most peaceful and serene of the Canary Islands. We usually suggest our guests visit the island with a Taxi Jeep tour. This is the only way to visit the island without missing anything. If you are interested we can provide contacts of people who offer this service. Since they are few it is always important to reserve the service in advance. During the summer season (June-September) it is better to reserve as soon as possible (even months in advance). There is also the possibility of renting mountain bikes or electric bikes but you need to be very trained to go on really bad off roads under a burning sun.

La Geria - Best Wineries

We suggest our guests visit only the following three wineries which in our opinion offer the best quality wines you can find here in Lanzarote. La Geria wine region is located at the heart of Lanzarote. It is a protected landscape unlike any other in the world. The Valle de La Geria was devoted exclusively to cereal growing for many years. It was not until the eruptions of nearby Timanfaya between 1730 and 1736 that the farmers were forced to come up with a new way of cultivating their land, which had suddenly been laid to waste. The grape here grows in a way unique to this world: a funnel-shaped hollow which, dug into the thick layers of picón—or volcanic ash—allows the plant to reach fertile soil, and retain the moisture from the dew. These deep hollows and the dry stone walls constructed to enclose them served to shelter the vines from the island’s constant trade winds. Row upon row, these perfect hollows, tinged with green, ochre, and black eventually traced a unique pattern over the land. The grapes are collected during the months of July and August, to make a wine, mainly white, with golden reflections and floral effluvium known as Malvasía.
They offer really good quality wines and they have a very nice exterior area where you can taste wine with a wonderful view over the vineyard. El Grifo is established as the oldest winery in the Canary Islands (founded in 1775), the 5th oldest in Spain, and the only known winery that has produced wines for almost 250 years without interruption. We strongly suggest visiting it and tasting some of their wine. The vineyards at El Grifo have produced malvasía wines since the end of the XVIII century. They are situated in the protected area of La Geria, in San Bartolome, an area covered with volcanic ash after the eruptions between 1730 and 1736.

טיפים לגבי העיר

מה כדאי לארוז?

What clothes should I pack for Lanzarote?

All year round: sun cream, beach wear, shorts, flip flops, hat, light cardigan, t-shirts, sneakers (not new or white), light scarf, sunglasses, sweatshirt, long pants. Jan, Feb, Nov, Dec: add also a jacket or fleece and waterproof. You will need trousers and a couple of layers for the evenings. Lanzarote is a windy island, and this to some people who are not used to the wind make them perceive a lower temperature than the real one. Consider your wind tolerance when packing your suitcase. In general, it is windier during summer (June-August) than in "winter" (here is not really winter 🤪).
