Sightseeing

I first visited here during a holiday and have taken plenty of guests since. It is remarkable how Cesar Manrique managed to turn these beautiful inassessable works of nature into a remarkable and safe place for all to visit.

The Fundacion has to be a must if visiting Lanzarote as Cesar Manrique is considered something of a God to islanders for the work he did to encourage tourism from around the world but at the same time making sure it remained unspoilt and kept its magic. Cesar Manrique gave up his house to be made into a museum and to display his art work, he moved to Haria to be near the rest of his family. Haria Cemetary would be his last resting place following a fatal car crash at the roundabout by his Tahiche house.

As you tuen off the main road towards Montaña Fuego you will see the Camels on the left, it is a good experience and supports the local economy to partake in a ride on one of them. The road then takes you to the car park for your trip around the Lunar Route, be sure to have your phone or camera at the ready. Then there is the demonstrations, the restaurant and the shop.

Mirador del Río Mirador del Río (Río Viewpoint) is one of the most unique architectural creations by César Manrique. It is located high up on the Risco de Famara escarpment at an altitude of 474 metres it is the northernmost point of Lanzarote. From here you can gaze over to the island of La Graciosa as well as the surreal Parque Natural del Archipelago Chinijo and the Risco de Famara.

The tiny seaside village of El Golfo is famous for the Charco de Los Clicos (green lagoon), the delicious fresh fish lunches enjoyed overlooking the sea and a location in the film Broken Embraces directed by Pedro Almodóvar and starring Penelope Cruz. El Golfo itself has a handful of houses, the old next to the modern, some with blue painted doors and others the traditional Lanzarote green. There’s a lovely atmosphere whilst walking along the Avenida Marítima, the friendly waiters all shout out “hola, buenos días” as you approach to try and tempt you to their particular restaurant, they’re not pushy and appreciated a reply as we passed by. We drove through the village and parked where the road stops and the National Park of Timanfaya begins. There’s a good sized children’s playground here which is handy for smaller children that have been cooped up in the car for a while, the older ones might like to explore the black pebble beach with rock pools just opposite the play area. If you’re not sure which restaurant in El Golfo to try and youwould like a recommendation, look out for Restaurante Costa Azul. I was introduced to this one by my friends, you won’t find any waiters in the street vying for business, they are simply tucked away on the left as you enter the village with a lovely frontline terrace.

This stretch of Lanzarote coastline is stunning and anyone exploring Lanzarote by car or bike shouldn’t miss this section of road (LZ-703) from the Salinas de Janubio to El Golfo. The tarmac cuts a smooth path through the inhospitable lava flow, it’s no wonder car commercials have been filmed here, the road curves around the coastline framed by the deep blue sky, crashing waves and lava landscape. Los Hervideros is situated mid way along the road, ignore the regular lay by’s unless you want to stop and admire the view, there is a good sized car park for this natural attraction. The name Los Hervideros translates to the “boiling pots” and a visit here is worth timing with a high tide or full moon to experience the full power of the waves crashing into the rocky cliffs. Look at the size of the people in these photos, you are left feeling dwarfed by the immense power of nature. In fact, the roughest ocean days are a fabulous time to visit Los Hervideros. There are winding footpaths throughout the cliff top here with lots of peep holes down to the sea below. Balconies have been built into the rock face which make great viewing platforms and the opportunity for a momento photograph.

If my family and friends want to go for a nice meal whilst in Lanzarote, this is a recommendation we always make. It is about 11€ in a taxi each way but the food and service from our experience is excellent.
