Veg Out is one of the few cafes or restaurants in Kyoto where vegans and vegetarians can enjoy a healthy meal in line with their lifestyle. You must try their Buddha Bowl which consisted of homemade falafel, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, surrounded by fresh seasonal greens. A “special sauce” was drizzled on top which was creamy with a citrus twist. Everything was served on a bed of brown rice which was a nice change to the white rice normally served in Japan. A soup of the day is free as a starter. The other options for the day were an Obanzai Vegetable Plate with vegetables steamed, fried, pickled and stewed or the Open Sandwich with vegan taco meat and guacamole.

This 13,000m2, privately owned garden is located on the steep Okitayama Hills. You can spend a day there, as many Japanese families and couples do, picnicking, taking photos, and simply enjoying the spring, one of the most beautiful seasons in Kyoto. Kyoto City Zoo is a great way to keep the kids entertained for a few hours. The animal enclosures are well laid out and the entire zoo is pleasantly spacious and easy to explore. In addition to the animals on display, there’s also a fun little amusement park with rides that kids love. The Ferris wheel here gives you a great view over the Northern Higashiyama area. Finally, there’s a proper sit-down restaurant above the main entrance, as well as a snack bar and a rest area with a huge collection of Japanese-language animal books. And on the opposite side of the zoo, there’s a small snack bar with an outdoor seating area where you can enjoy ice creams on a hot summer day.
