If you like a challenge there are plenty of hills and mountains to be climbed, including Crossfell, 2930ft which is prominent behind Linden Farm House and is the highest of the Pennine fells set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Blencathra known as Saddleback with its six separate fell tops the highest is Hallsfell at 2848 ft. Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England, 3118 ft the scenery includes three deep glacial coves and two sharp topped ridges, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. This is very challenging wild place.

Route Summary: Before you go, some tips from me! Not a flip flop or trainer walk! Be prepared, this is a great day out but it’s a hard walk and relentless in places. Walking boots or shoes, backpack, plenty to drink (water) snack bars and lunch. A decent waterproof coat and waterproof trousers, if you get caught without, you will seriously regret it. My husband has walked this many times from all directions and myself a couple of times. From steaming hot sunshine to snow covered. You can start in the sun and finish in the rain, it can be warm at the bottom with a very chilly wind at the top, please go prepared and if conditions change for the worse head back down, better to be a live chicken than a dead duck as dead ducks don’t quack!! Seriously you can walk this and wonder what’s all the fuss, and generally that’s how it goes, but show the fells respect, they have taken lives. Not a T shirt and shorts walk. Please bring all your rubbish home to the bin, we love Cumbria without it. This could be one of the most popular ridge walks in the country – an exciting scramble along Striding Edge to reach Helvellyn, if you don’t want the scary heights or rock climbing then drive to Thirlmere and start your walk from there, you will still get the great views but avoid the dangers of Striding Edge. This walk includes the 2 Wainwrights of Helvellyn, Birkhouse Moor This walk includes the Hewitt of Helvellyn This walk includes the 3 Nuttalls of Helvellyn, Striding Edge (High Spying How), Birkhouse Moor Route Start Location: Glenridding - Helvellyn Distance Ascent Time 5.77 km 788 m 2.5 hours Calculate the time using Naismith’s Rule and factor in your own pace. Activivity Type: Hard Walk, Scrambling, Scrambling Grade 1 Summits and Places on this Route Helvellyn Striding Edge (High Spying How) Facilities Glenridding has plenty of pubs, cafes and hotels. The Pay and Display car park has its own toilet block with baby changing facilities. Hazards Striding Edge is an exposed scramble that should only be attempted if you’re confident in your abilities and have a head for heights. The scramble down the Chimney can prove a little challenging to some also. If you don’t like heights and don’t wish to climb down a bit of a drop then I wouldn’t advise this route. In the winter, even if the ridges are clear of snow, Helvellyn can hold onto a dangerous cornice on its north eastern face – this should always be avoided. Due to its flatness, the summit plateau of Helvellyn can be confusing in the mist and care should be taken when finding the correct route off. Remember that we cannot outline every single hazard on a walk – it’s up to you to be safe and competent. Read up on Mountain Safety , Navigation and what equipment you’ll need. Parking : CA11 0PD Due to the popularity of Helvellyn there is a large Pay and Display car park in Glenridding. Free parking can also be found along the Greenside Road Route Summary from Thirlmere. While more straight forward than approaching Helvellyn from Striding Edge, this is a fantastic route in its own right. Helvellyn from Thirlmere avoids the crowds and follows a wide, high-level path before descending to Grisedale Tarn. The final section of the route runs through a forestry track with impressive views over Thirlmere. This walk includes the 3 Wainwrights of Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike This walk includes the 2 Hewitts of Helvellyn, Dollywaggon Pike This walk includes the 3 Nuttalls of Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike Route Start Location: Swirls Car Park Distance Ascent Time 15.42 km 1014 m 5 hours Calculate the time using Naismith’s Rule and factor in your own pace. Parking : CA12 4TW Swirls car park, which is currently free or lay-by parking on the A591 just north of Swirls.
