For the best spotting opportunities, the refuge recommends arriving within two hours of high tide. Other wildlife also commonly spotted at the refuge includes pronghorn antelope, box turtles, and migratory orca whales.

Great for bird lovers. Lots of trails and they have a birding expert on Saturdays at 9 most weekends to show you the local birds.

Beautiful boardwalk through forested area with views of the Nisqually river and marsh. There is a short loop or a longer loop depending on your level/strength. Our favorite is the twin barns, gorgeous!

This is an amazing walk out to the newly revamped walkway. You can sometimes see seals out here. You will need a pass to park which you can borrow from me. If you go early in the morning and late in the evening it is quieter and you may see more wildlife. The paths are mostly wheelchair…

“3 miles of walking trails in lush forest, ending at an old train trestle which now serves as seal, bird & bat habitat. Bring binoculars of you have them! WA Discover Pass required to park & unfortunately you cannot pay for a pass on site. Alternatively, park at the Chehalis Western Trail parking lot for free & walk down the road to the Conservation Area. ”

“Just what created these odd, bubble-like mounds southwest of Olympia is a mystery. And this puzzle is one with proposed answers ranging from giant gophers to earthquakes and glaciation, as well as extraterrestrial activity. Whatever the answer, the Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve is a great place for walking or hiking, particularly in the spring when the wildflowers are in bloom on the rolling hills. ”

“This is a great place to take a picnic or launch our canoe or watch the boats come and go. Much of the beach here is privately owned so you can't really take a beach wander but the marina has an awesome fireworks display”

“This is a large but quiet park about 5 min drive away with an amazing fun walk down to the beach. Kids will run on ahead through the ferns and tall fir trees. You can easily imagine pixies and fairies wandering about and I am sure I have seen a hobbit or too running ahead on the long winding downhill path to the beach. Once on the beach you can find little sand crabs, driftwood, and occasionally sea shells. These paths are not for the intrepid as it is fun to get to the beach but can be a long walk back up the hill to the parking lot. Make sure you go to the bathroom and pack all your stuff you won't want to walk back up for some small item you forgot in the car. The park also has a great playground and picnic area where you can smell the flowers in bloom and play frisbee in the big open field. This park is not as visited so often you will almost have it to yourself which i love. ”
