A Roman walk from Pigneto to Monte Celio

Sightseeing

When you’ve seen the usual highlights in Rome, we warmly recommend a little journey of unexpected discovery from Pigneto to Trastevere passing through the wonderful Celio neighbourhood. Pigneto is home to a vibrant food scene. Visit Necci for some fine dining and Rosti al Pigneto for eating with the locals. Pigneto is a small walk away from the longest stretch of Roman aquaduct you will find in the city center. In later centuries partly converted into the Aurelian walls, the aquaduct now serves as unique parks for today’s Romans.

Walk from the Aurelian walls to Monte Celio and discover a hidden treasure. Santo Stefano is an early Christian church in a unique round form, probably repurposing an even older pagan Roman temple. The Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo al Celio is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the world. Don’t expect a typical church, since everything is different in this one: a round church, hidden in a small Celio street, lush palm trees in its garden.

Roman emperors competed to leave their legacy to the city of Rome in the form of aquaducts and baths. Caracalla’s baths probably topped all of them, although the Diocletian baths come close. The ruins already are impressive, imagine how the baths must have been in operation open to the one million inhabitants of the ancient city. Today the baths host concerts and music festivals.

Head for the Scala Sancta to get your wishes fulfilled. Any wish actually. Supposedly being the stairs Jesus Christ walked on in the palace of Pontius Pilatus, a medieval pope had it moved to Rome.

Monte Celio is home to the historical place where Paul and Peter met. Both went on to become saints and die a not too pleasant death. Christianity honoured the place with another cathedral.
