Sightseeing
It's a fun family outing with either a short hike up a steep trail or a longer hike that's off of Horseshoe Trail. There used to be a small railroad that would take visitors up to the top of the hill where the observation tower is located. Governor Dick Observation Tower is in Governor Dick State Park. It's close to Mount Gretna. Visiting the Jigger Shop for some ice cream or a meal afterwards is a real treat.

Hiking
The Appalachian Trail goes from Maine to Georgia, but you can hike a two mile stretch between highways 645 and 501 about 15 miles north of The Mansion in The Pines. It's about a 25 minute drive from here. You can park at either end and hike as far as you want. If you leave a vehicle at the other end, you can do a two mile hike without returning to where you started. The shelter is for through hikers to sleep overnight, but there's a good amount of parking along highway 501 at the location.
Our daughter, Mercy, organized an American Heritage Girls event where they picked up trash at both parking areas and hiked the two miles in between.

Food scene
Carolyn recommends the Jigger Shop. It's an old fashioned historic ice cream shop that's been in existence over 100 years. It's very nostalgic with a unique setting in the woods. Their food is great and the ice cream is delicious!
