Green River Gorge is the last river-cut rock canyon in Western Washington and is 12 miles long. A wild place of natural wonder just east of Black Diamond, the gorge remains isolated, allowing it to survive man’s intrusion. Slashing down 300 feet into the Puget Sound’s 50-million-year-old sub-tropical past. Coal miners have lived here, their lives now marked by a ghost town you can hike to. A coal seam, part of a mine abandoned decades ago, still burns today. Petrified wood, fossils and even a petroglyph are found here by the rafters and kayakers, fishermen, hikers, our guests and berry pickers who have learned and come back to the gorge’s beauty.

Sightseeing

This beautiful and popular park is famous for summer tubing and rafting in the river. Flaming Geyser also has a specially designated area for flying remote-controlled model airplanes. The park was named for a flame which burned through a concrete basin, fueled by a methane gas pocket 1,000 feet (300 m) below the surface. When the pocket was discovered by prospective coal miners in the early 1900s, the test hole hit gas and saltwater, shooting water and flames 25 feet (10 m) into the air. The same methane pocket seeps gas through a mud hole to create the "Bubbling Geyser" nearby. Great for easy hiking, picnics and cooling down in the water on a hot summer day.

South Prairie is one of Pierce County’s plateau communities perched above the Puyallup River valley on a plateau forged from glacial retreat and volcanic activity. The area abounds with small-town charm, rural living and outdoor recreation. The gateway to Mount Rainier and Lake Tapps dominate the geography, providing a backdrop to the best of Western Washington living.

Outdoor hiking

Take every caution to stay away from the waters edsge when exploring during winter months and when river is full. A few years ago the owners, of resort and surrounding area on both sides of the river, reopened access to the Gorge. For $5 that you place in a box on either side of the river you can park and access this incredible oasis. From the resort side of the river you park in a lot across the street from the resort building near a small pond. Then you enter through a chain link gate on the left side of the green resort building and step into another world. A wooden staircase leads under the one lane bridge towering above. It bends a way down to the river and passes by a spring that forms the waterfall further down. A platform has a bench beside the spring and overlooks the river below. The end of the wooden staircases transitions to worn sandstone steps and pathways. One trail leads to a cave behind the iconic waterfall that you can see from the bridge overlook above. Behind the waterfall is the cave with a pool carved out of the sandstone. A steel lined fence runs along the permitter of the cave to keep anyone from falling. Water droplets form rain beneath the eve of the cave as the waterfall cascade past the opening, streaming down the sandstone face beyond the lip of the cave. I’ve often wondered if the water in the carved stone pool was heated at one time because to sit in that cold water in the shade of the overhang would be quite frigid. Trail leads down to the river, dangerous with rapids in the winter so stay clear of edge, shallow swimming holes in the summer make this a magical spot to cool off on a hot PNW day.
