La Coupole in Montparnasse is the grandest of grand Parisian brasseries. An Art Deco triumph on an extraordinary scale, its famously vast dining room was once regularly graced by the top tiers of the artistic Rive Gauche set like Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. People still come here from all over the world, to marvel at its splendour - all 1000 square metres and 33 pillars of it - and to people watch, a timeless La Coupole pastime. The terrace tables in particular are perfect for watching life go by over a coffee and a crêpe Suzette. If you want an absolutely classic Parisian grand brasserie experience without spending too much, try La Couple.

* * * The high elegance of Saint-Germain doesn’t often lend itself to this sort of trendy neo-bistrot; more usually, the choice is between a much-hyped gourmet destination (with prices to match) or a simply overpriced tourist trap.

Pantheon was originally built as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve and to house the reliquary châsse containing her relics but, after many changes, now functions as a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens. It is an early example of neoclassicism, with a façade modeled on the Pantheon in Rome, surmounted by a dome that owes some of its character to Bramante's "Tempietto". Located on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the Panthéon looks out over all of Paris.

Parks & Nature

Tout en beauté, un parc incontournable de la rive gauche. Poussez vous aussi vos petits bateaux sous la grande fontaine centrale. * * * The Jardin du Luxembourg is located in the 6th arrondissement, and is where the locals go for a run, so why not join them and discover all the statues and artwork the park has to offer while burning those extra calories from all the crepes and cheese? The park was created in 1612 and has since evolved to become the beautiful space it is today: home to six tennis courts and a playground as well as impressive sculptures. Things to be done here include pony rides, sailing your sailboat in the central fountain and enjoying a famous Guignol puppet show.

This is a hidden park on top of the Montparnasse train station. Most Parisians don't even know it exists! Enter the train station, find track 1 - 2. There's a metal staircase to the left. Take it all the way up until you're on top of the train station. It's a great picnic spot, lovely grass planes. There's also a museum of the Résistance there.
