A great place with free parking... this is what you see from the living room window

This is one of the best short walks in south Lakeland, ranging from 400 yards to 4 or 5 miles depending on what you want. Take the Underbarrow Road out of Kendal heading for Underbarrow and Crosthwaite. Once you have crossed over the Kendal Bypass keep going to the very top of the hill, Post Code LA8 8HA, Grid Ref. SD 487 924. Just over the top of the hill, about 10 yards, there is a free gravel car park on the right. Park there and walk down back to the road. Opposite there is a gate. Go through and follow the path. After about 400 yards you will come out on to the limestone pavement and the whole of South Lakeland will open up below you. From there the walk is flat. You can follow the edge up to the viewpoint, called locally “The Mushroom” or continue on for about four miles to come out at Helsington Church just off the Brigsteer Road. For value for money this is a bit of a scoundrels walk it is so easy. It is also ideal for runners, dog walkers or photographers.

scout scar is a lovely place to walk. It has view point at the top called the mushroom & you can see the Lakeland fells & right down to the sea. Great for dogs & children. Also has a car park or if you are feeling fit you can walk from Kendal
