The nearest excavated fully tourist friendly fort on the Roman Wall. You can do Birdoswald and Vindolanda in a a day

A roman fort, not as well excavated as Vindolanda, but worth a visit, has a cafe too

Interesting, dog friendly. You can also walk along hadrians wall down to a river. There is a charge to go into the Fort and visitor center.
